Dr. Fox was ordained in 1984 and has served churches in Colorado and Spokane, WA in interim and stated supply positions. From 2001- 2007 he served as Minister of Adult Education at First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs, CO, a multi-staff, urban/suburban church of 5000 members. He led and developed a large, wide-ranging, and vital educational ministry that served some 1500 adults on a weekly basis. He is skilled in program administration, but finds his joy in teaching -- especially the Bible and courses on the intersection of theology and contemporary culture. He developed and taught more than 35 classes during his time at First Presbyterian.
Dr. Fox served as Visiting Professor Church History at the Evangelical (Presbyterian) Theological Seminary in Cairo, Egypt in 2010. He is Adjunct Professor of Church History, Historical and Systematic Theology, Homiletics and Presbyterian Polity, for Fuller Theological Seminary, teaching at their Colorado Springs and Seattle campuses. He has broad experience in leading workshops and conferences throughout the PC(USA) and abroad. He has served two Presbyterian educational institutions: Whitworth University, Spokane, WA (1984- 88) and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Austin, TX (1997- 2000).
Pastoral care and preaching are additional strengths of Dr. Fox. He enjoys people and is adept at building and maintaining relationships. He said, "I have long understood my vocation as a pastor who teaches and a teacher who pastors." In describing his leadership style, he pointed to the ordination vow to be a "friend to our colleagues in ministry." "I take that pledge very seriously. The heart of ministry is relationship -- God reaching out to persons in their need through the availability of others. That is the context in which I made a personal faith commitment to Jesus Christ during high school, and it has been my foundation ever since."
Dr. Fox graduated from Colorado College with a B.A. degree in history. He earned the M.Div. in 1982 in Biblical Studies and Theology, and an M.A. in 1983 in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship, from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. His Th.M. is from Princeton Theological Seminary in Historical Theology (1989) and his Ph.D. is from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, in History of Christian Thought, with a minor concentration in Preaching (1997). In addition, he has studied Theology at both Oxford University, Wycliffe Hall, England, and at the University of Aberdeen, Faculty of Divinity, Scotland.
He is married to Nancy Fox, who is also a pastor. Nancy has served churches in Spokane, WA, Nashville, TN, Austin, TX and Colorado Springs, focusing on pastoral care and especially international missions. Dr. Fox and Nancy have two adult children. Jonathan is a 2010 graduate of Whitworth University and Christina is a junior at Middlebury College in Vermont.
